Creating Wellness – 8 Keys

1. CREATE A CLEAR VISION OF WHAT YOUR HEALTHY LIFE WILL LOOK LIKE.
How will you feel? What will you look like? What types of activities will you be doing? Make this vision as clear and specific as you can. Try to really be there in your mind.
Remember, this is an ideal vision so do not limit yourself … let yourself soar!

2. FIGURE OUT WHAT'S MISSING FOR YOU.
What do you need to move forward toward your wellness vision? Do you need to alter or replace limiting or negative beliefs? Do you need more information or skills or the support of friends or professionals? Do you need to increase your level of commitment?

3. CREATE A STEP BY STEP PLAN TO GET WHERE YOU WANT TO BE.
What do you actually need to do or strive to make your wellness vision a reality. If you have trouble figuring this out, try going back to your vision of a healthy life and then mentally look backwards and ask yourself how you got there.

4. SET GOALS THAT ARE MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE AND HAVE A TIME LINE.
Set stepwise goals that you can measure (so you'll know when you reach them). Make them achievable but hard enough to "stretch" you a little and keep you moving forward. Be sure you set a timeline in place to keep you from procrastinating.

5. CREATE A SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR YOUR SUCCESS.
Partner up with someone (a coach, a friend, a spouse) who can check in with you as to your progress and help you celebrate your achievements. This person can also be a valuable source of encouragement when you slip off the path. If you need information or skills, get those as well. Arrange your environment to give yourself the best possible chance to reach your goals.

6. IDENTIFY AND ELIMINATE OR NEUTRALIZE SOURCES OF DISTRESS AND WORRY.
Distress and worry sap your energy and can derail your efforts to succeed. Try to identify the sources of negativity in your life and either eliminate or minimize them or revise your beliefs about them and shift your perspective so that they are no longer so troublesome to you.

7. BRING THE BIG AREAS OF YOUR LIFE INTO BALANCE.
Look at the large areas of your life (career, health, financial, relationships, recreation and spirituality) and notice whether you feel that these areas are in a good balance. Is one or more areas either overemphasized or ignored? What could you do to bring these areas into greater harmony?

8. GET YOUR ACTIONS IN THE WORLD INTO ALIGNMENT WITH WHAT YOU VALUE.
If your actions in the world do not align with your deeply held values and the things that are really important to you, stress will be the result. It's important that everything you do be an accurate reflection of who you want to be. Review your life as you did in step 7 above and determine if your actions and usual responses really say what you want to say about yourself.
